the bad boy of fashion needs his own post

A few days ago I went to go see the Jean Paul Gaultier exhibit in the San Francisco DeYoung museum. It was amazing.
You walk in and are immediately creeped out because the mannequins are multimedia. What? They have faces projected onto them! They talk, and blink, and stuff moves. And there is a recording of Gaultier with his french accent talking about his love of Breton stripes.
Then it moved to mermaids. <3

The detail in each piece is STUNNING. For very intensive works he worked upwards of a hundred hours for them. Haute couture is mindblowing.

Marion Cotillard wore a white version and looks STUNNING. (insert siren joke here)

It moves on to religious imagery.

My favorite is the one with the heart applique! It is being stabbed with a knife and is bleeding down.
After this is just goes to lots of things, his punk period, his Spanish/Chinese, African, Russian, etc influences and mash ups, his corsets, his stage costumes, and costumes for movies, etc.
Every sequin on that leopard was hand stitched and it has beautifully rendered claws, and a tail, and everything. It is macabre and beautiful and really make me appreciate what you can do with shiny things like sequins.

This is a wedding dress.

This one is one of my favorites because of the detailed beading. Sadly...you can't really see it.

On the left dress, there is a dragon design that is integrated into the slit. Not only that (its like a crochet cut out), but on the front there are rounder beads to denote mushroom clouds and the back has bamboo. It is all black on black, but they way he used the textures and the type of beads vs sequins on the dress is subtle and inspired.
He does this here, too (a better picture).
There were amazing corsets.

Yes, those are wheat stalks.
There were fantastic demi-jackets on dresses.

And his fascination with the human body. I'm usually very prudish but yes, beauty can be found anywhere. XD the odder ones weren't my favorites, though. I like the more direct play on body structure.

And there was this other bodysuit with veins in red sequins. Her heart was a <3 shape and she was holding an anatomically correct purse. IT WAS GENIUS.
One of my favorites because I adore knits. And tulle! What a combination.

The crochet work is awe inspiring.

The ribbons overlap to make a chevron pattern and are so evenly spaced. Guh this detail slays me.
....andddd one more joke.

FEZZES ARE COOL! and fashionable. ;)
In conclusion.

BAMF. GO SEE THIS IF YOU CAN!!!!
